Joanne Rowling was born in the English town of Yate on July 31, 1965. She grew up in the Welsh town of Chepstow, near Tutshill. She went to Exeter University and earned a French and Classics degree there. She worked as a researcher and bilingual secretary for Amnesty International after she graduated from college. In 1992, she married Jorge Arantes, a Portuguese journalist. Before they broke up in 1995, they had a daughter named Jessica Isabel Rowling Arantes.
